The Peace Corps is an independent agency of the United States government, established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, (source Peace Corps) with a mission to promote world peace and friendship. It achieves this by deploying American volunteers to work alongside communities in over 60 countries, focusing on areas such as education, health, community economic development, environment, and youth development. Volunteers commit to two years of service, during which they immerse themselves in local cultures, exchange knowledge, and contribute to sustainable development projects. Please join the Pearl Harbor Rotary Club with this annual cleanup project of the Ehime Maru Memorial that commemorates the tragic collision of the Ehime Maru, a Japanese fishery high school training ship and the USS Greeneville on February 9, 2001, that caused the death of 35 people on board, four students, two teachers, and three crew members. Every week, a different organization cleans the memorial, not only to clean the memorial, but to pay respects to those that lost their lives there. There are visitors that travel from around the world, but mostly from Japan, to adorn the memorial with flowers and memorabilia, and our job is to clean the area each week. There will be a short explanation of the event by Steve Dyer, a member of the Pearl Harbor Rotary Club who was instrumental in soothing the relations between the US and Japan and to avoid an International incident on that day. Attached is a flier for the event. Please respond to me instead of the Pearl Harbor Club if you can make this truly memorable experience in hearing about this event. About Hawaii Rotary Youth FoundationThe Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation (HRYF), was founded by Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan during his year as the Rotary’s District Governor in Hawaii, 1976-1977. It was Sully’s desire to assist Hawaii’s high school graduates realize their potential by attending a college or university of their choice here in Hawaii or on the mainland United States. He felt that HRYF could be the vehicle to teach our young people about the advantages of the free enterprise system, the basis of our democracy. The foundation was incorporated in the State of Hawaii as a non-profit on September 3, 1976, with “Sully” as its president until July 1, 1986, when he assumed the position of Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Since then, six others have served as President. Included in this number are three Past District Governors. The activities of the Foundation are guided by the Charter of Incorporation and a set of by-laws. A membership meeting is convened in the second quarter of each calendar year with club representatives, officers and trustees in attendance. The first Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation scholarship was granted in 1977 and since then through March 18, 2018, HRYF has awarded 1750 scholarships with a total value of $6,488,313. In memory of “Sully”, who passed away on February 28, 1998, HRYF established a Maurice J. Sullivan Scholar Award. Each year, one outstanding student will receive this scholarship grant in the amount of $10,000. In 2008, HRYF also established the Joanna Lau Sullivan Scholar Award. This $10,000 award is given to an outstanding student attending a 4-year college or university in Hawaii. |

Whether your club is a subordinate under Rotary International’s 501(c)(4) group exemption or is independently tax-exempt, the IRS requires that all Rotary clubs in the U.S. and its territories file an annual information return. For clubs whose tax year follows the Rotary year, the deadline to file is 15 November. The form a club must file is dependent upon its gross receipts for the year. For more information, please see Frequently asked questions about annual reporting requirements for exempt organizations at www.irs.gov. It is important that your club comply with IRS requirements. Please note Section 6033(j) of the Internal Revenue Code automatically revokes the exemption of any organization that fails to satisfy its filing requirement for three consecutive years. Our document, US Rotary and Rotaract Clubs and the IRS: Frequently Asked Questions, provides general information about Rotary clubs and the IRS. For specific questions regarding your club’s tax-exempt status, reporting requirements, or your club’s ability to file, contact local counsel, your tax adviser, or the IRS directly at www.irs.gov or 877-829-5500. |
