History of Pearl Harbor
May 12, 2026 6:00 PM
James “Jim” Neuman serves as the historian for Navy Region Hawaii, where he preserves and shares the history of Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam, including the legacy of the USS Arizona Memorial. A 20-year federal servant, he began his Navy career in 1988 as an active-duty Ocean Systems Technician Analyst, later served in the Navy Reserves until retiring in 2022 as an Intelligence Specialist, and has worked as a Navy civilian. Since 2009, he has used history to inspire service members and civilians to understand and carry forward the lessons of the past. Previously, he worked as a tour guide and archivist at the Battleship Missouri Memorial, where he preserved historical materials and recorded hundreds of veteran oral histories for the National Archives. Born in Michigan and raised in Florida and Georgia, Neuman has called Hawaii home for more than three decades and earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Hawaii–West Oahu in 2005. |

Jun 20, 2026 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Please join the Pearl Harbor Rotary Club with this annual cleanup project of the Ehime Maru Memorial that commemorates the tragic collision of the Ehime Maru, a Japanese fishery high school training ship and the USS Greeneville on February 9, 2001, that caused the death of 35 people on board, four students, two teachers, and three crew members. Every week, a different organization cleans the memorial, not only to clean the memorial, but to pay respects to those that lost their lives there. There are visitors that travel from around the world, but mostly from Japan, to adorn the memorial with flowers and memorabilia, and our job is to clean the area each week. There will be a short explanation of the event by Steve Dyer, a member of the Pearl Harbor Rotary Club who was instrumental in soothing the relations between the US and Japan and to avoid an International incident on that day. Attached is a flier for the event. Please respond to me instead of the Pearl Harbor Club if you can make this truly memorable experience in hearing about this event. Mahalo, Allen Kamemoto |

Stephanie Sharpe Navy Veteran, Healthcare Specialist & Dedicated Community Leader Stephanie spent 21 years of dedicated service in the United States Navy, beginning her career as a Navy Corpsman before advancing to become a Nurse Anesthetist. Throughout her military career, she deployed multiple times to provide critical humanitarian aid around the globe, notably serving on the front lines of the disaster relief efforts following the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami in Indonesia. Following her retirement from the military, Stephanie transitioned her passion for service into local community leadership and environmental stewardship in Hawaii. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Hawaiian Islands Honor Flight (HIHF), working tirelessly to honor and transport local veterans to Washington, D.C. HIHF, is a local hub of the National Honor Flight Network, a national nonprofit organization comprised of independent hubs working together to achieve the Honor Flight mission. In furtherance of this common goal, we have the enormous privilege of showing our nation’s veterans the appreciation and honor they deserve. Participation in an Honor Flight trip gives veterans the opportunity to share this momentous occasion with other comrades, remember the fallen, and share their stories and experiences with other veterans. Honored veterans always travel free of charge, thanks to generous donations to our organization. While initially focused solely on America’s World War II era veterans, Honor Flight Network has expanded its mission to include those who served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War eras. The Honor Flight TLC program also honors veterans of any service era who are critically ill. Deeply committed to protecting Hawaii's unique ecosystem and supporting its residents, Stephanie also volunteers her time with the Oahu Honu Nesting Team, where she helps safeguard endangered sea turtles, and continues her lifelong mission of care as a volunteer with the American Red Cross and as a steward at several Native Hawaiian Cultural sites. |
