Since the onset of the pandemic, food insecurity in Hawaiʻi has grown by more than 50 percent — representing the fourth highest percentage increase in the United States. Now, nearly a quarter of a million Hawaiʻi residents are currently struggling with hunger. Among them are out-of-work parents, isolated kūpuna and 1 in 4 keiki.

More than 70 volunteers joined the Rotary Club of Hickam Pearl Harbor at the Hawai‘i Foodbank in Honolulu to assemble more than 2,000 food boxes for the Foodbank’s Senior Food Box Program.

The Program, otherwise known as the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), provides a monthly box of quality USDA food to low-income kūpuna.

Hawaii Foodbank seeks out community partners to help in assembling food boxes. This month, the Rotary Club of Hickam Pearl Harbor led the recruiting efforts to identify volunteers from partners, such as the US Military, Dynamic Healing Center, ALTRES, and other Rotary Clubs of Hawaii.

The Rotary Club of Hickam Pearl Harbor is one of 53 clubs in the state that host community service projects throughout year. The public is invited to attend any service project and can find more information at RotaryInHawaii.org or go directly to RotaryHPH.org/events.
