History of Pearl Harbor
May 12, 2026 6:00 PM
James “Jim” Neuman serves as the historian for Navy Region Hawaii, where he preserves and shares the history of Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam, including the legacy of the USS Arizona Memorial. A 20-year federal servant, he began his Navy career in 1988 as an active-duty Ocean Systems Technician Analyst, later served in the Navy Reserves until retiring in 2022 as an Intelligence Specialist, and has worked as a Navy civilian. Since 2009, he has used history to inspire service members and civilians to understand and carry forward the lessons of the past. Previously, he worked as a tour guide and archivist at the Battleship Missouri Memorial, where he preserved historical materials and recorded hundreds of veteran oral histories for the National Archives. Born in Michigan and raised in Florida and Georgia, Neuman has called Hawaii home for more than three decades and earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Hawaii–West Oahu in 2005. |

Jun 20, 2026 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Please join the Pearl Harbor Rotary Club with this annual cleanup project of the Ehime Maru Memorial that commemorates the tragic collision of the Ehime Maru, a Japanese fishery high school training ship and the USS Greeneville on February 9, 2001, that caused the death of 35 people on board, four students, two teachers, and three crew members. Every week, a different organization cleans the memorial, not only to clean the memorial, but to pay respects to those that lost their lives there. There are visitors that travel from around the world, but mostly from Japan, to adorn the memorial with flowers and memorabilia, and our job is to clean the area each week. There will be a short explanation of the event by Steve Dyer, a member of the Pearl Harbor Rotary Club who was instrumental in soothing the relations between the US and Japan and to avoid an International incident on that day. Attached is a flier for the event. Please respond to me instead of the Pearl Harbor Club if you can make this truly memorable experience in hearing about this event. Mahalo, Allen Kamemoto |
