Bud Bowles – MSW, CPRP, HCPS

Executive Director

Mr. Bud Bowles is a distinguished advocate for mental health and an accomplished professional in both marketing and public relations. Mr. Bowles will address us on a critical topic: "The most ignored organ in the body - How to stay mentally healthy!"

A proud alumnus of the University of Hawaii, Bud boasts a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and a Master's in Social Work. Furthermore, his qualifications include certifications as a Psychosocial Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP) and as a Hawaii Certified Peer Specialist (HCPS).

Since 1997, Bud has led United Self Help as its Executive Director, contributing significantly to its growth. Under his leadership, the organization offers a variety of services such as 25 support groups, educational classes, a monthly celebration, computer lessons, and even free computers for its members. Impressively, last year alone, over 1,000 individuals engaged in their diverse events.

In recognition of his efforts, Bud received the "Consumer of the Year" award from Mental Health America in 2023 and has been honored with the Weinberg Foundations Achievement in Management Award on four occasions.

Bud's commitment to eradicating the stigma associated with mental health has led him to deliver over 2,000 enlightening talks, reaching more than 14,000 individuals, with topics centered on stress reduction, symptom recognition, and lifestyle choices. A testament to the impact of his talks, a Rotarian once remarked, "It’s the best talk I’ve heard on mental health, and I’m a psychologist."

But before delving into the realm of mental health, Bud wore many hats. He served as the Advertising and PR director for Holiday Mart, the PR director for Sheraton Hotels in Hawaii, and even spearheaded promotions for Pearlridge Shopping Center. Additionally, his entrepreneurial spirit shone as he ran his own advertising agency for two decades.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bud dedicated 23 years to the Hawaii Army National Guard, retiring as a Major in Public Affairs. He is also a seasoned speaker, being a former Toastmaster, a thrice graduate of the Dale Carnegie course, where he was twice awarded for his impromptu speeches.
