Dole Rummage Sale - donations needed

Join the Rotary Club of Hickam Pearl Harbor as we come together for a hands-on community cleanup at beautiful Puʻuloa Springs. This service event is open to members, guests, and anyone who cares about protecting our island’s natural spaces.

This is a great opportunity to connect with others, contribute to environmental stewardship, and show aloha to our land. We'll be removing debris, cleaning up the area, and sharing in a spirit of service. All cleanup materials will be provided.

Who Can Join:

✔️ Guests
✔️ Friends, family, and anyone interested in volunteering!

What to Bring:
Comfortable clothes (long pants and long shirts required for yard work), work gloves, toe-covering shoes, reusable water bottle, hat/sunscreen, and your aloha spirit!

p.s. - Where EXACTLY? Park at Blaisdell Park walk to the water and walk 'Ewa about 20 yards

For those interested, there will be a brief talk about the Native Hawaiian plants and birds in the area.

Kathleen Merriam

Mental Health Matters

Kathleen Rhoads Merriam moved to Hawaii in 2003 from working at Fountain House, NYC, the largest psychiatric rehabilitation program for adults with mental illness. The Department of Health hired her to strengthen and develop Clubhouse Day programs and since then, she has held a variety of positions with the Adult Mental Health Division.

Kathleen joined Rotary as soon as she moved to Hawaii and met her husband and former district governor, Mark.

She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor; she has worked in mental health services over 35 years.

Kathleen’s perspective comes from being a consumer, family member, provider, and administrator in mental health. She believes her own experience in various mental health systems as someone living with Bipolar illness has provided her with the greatest wisdom.

Kathleen is the recipient of the Mental Health Outstanding Government Leader Award and the Department of Health Sustained Superior Performance Award. Additionally, she is the Past President of the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu and a current member of the Kaneohe Rotary Club.

Campus Beautification at Dole Middle School

Join Rotary Club HPH for a hands-on community service project as we come together to restore outdoor benches and tables for our local school.

We’ll be sanding and repainting a total of 22 benches and 8 tables, helping to refresh shared spaces for students and the community. This is a great opportunity to give back, connect with others, and make a visible impact in just one morning.

Volunteer Details:

  • We’re seeking up to 25 adult volunteers who are comfortable using basic tools
  • Volunteers will work alongside participants from KTV, YMCA, and Dole faculty
  • Each group will include approximately 3 adults supervising youth participants
  • Members of the Dole Interact Club (8 students) will join for final sanding and painting

Schedule:

  • 8:00 AM – Adult volunteers begin sanding (orbital sanders will be used)
  • 9:00 AM -12:00 PM – Student volunteers arrive to assist with final sanding and painting (with supervised use of tools)

Check-In & Setup:

  • A sign-in desk (look for the Rotary club banner) will be set up upon arrival
  • Volunteers will receive name tags, tools, and group assignments at check-in

Tools & Supplies:

  • The school will provide: paint brushes, drop cloths, orbital sanders, extension cords, and safety goggles, etc
  • If you have your own tools or goggles, you are welcome (and encouraged) to bring them

What to Wear:

  • Please wear clothes suitable for sanding and painting (okay to get dirty!)
  • Closed-toe shoes are recommended for safety

What to Expect:

  • Rotary HPH will provide food and drinks for all volunteers
  • Ample parking is available on-site

Come ready to get a little dusty, work as a team, and make a difference! Please CALL or TEXT Jayce with questions.

 

**Rotarian Members Only – Youth Protection Requirement:
Any Rotary Club member working with youth must complete a background check through the district. The club will reimburse the cost once the background check is completed through the official district process.

Stair Decal DATE NOT CONFIRMED

Dole Middle is looking to have their school stairs decalled like Kalihi Els. 

We're working with Metro Rotary Club member, Eugene Price  to produce and install decals on the steps and floors as they have in the past. Our
club agreed to purchase the materials and assist in the manpower for this project.
Eugene Price will again supervise the entire project by providing detailed instructions on how to clean the surface of the steps, apply the decal and seal it with the heating gun and painting a coating on the stairs to provide protection.

Approx. 8 students (at most) from the Dole Interact club will be able to attend 
Only a handlefull of volunteers needed for this project.

James Neuman, Navy Region Historian

History of Pearl Harbor

James “Jim” Neuman serves as the historian for Navy Region Hawaii, where he preserves and shares the history of Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam, including the legacy of the USS Arizona Memorial. A 20-year federal servant, he began his Navy career in 1988 as an active-duty Ocean Systems Technician Analyst, later served in the Navy Reserves until retiring in 2022 as an Intelligence Specialist, and has worked as a Navy civilian. Since 2009, he has used history to inspire service members and civilians to understand and carry forward the lessons of the past. Previously, he worked as a tour guide and archivist at the Battleship Missouri Memorial, where he preserved historical materials and recorded hundreds of veteran oral histories for the National Archives. Born in Michigan and raised in Florida and Georgia, Neuman has called Hawaii home for more than three decades and earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Hawaii–West Oahu in 2005.

Powerwash Beautification @ Dole Middle

Join the Rotary Club HPH for a hands-on community service project as we help beautify Dole Middle School by cleaning the 6th through 8th grade buildings.

This project will focus on power washing and hand washing exterior surfaces, helping to refresh and maintain a clean, welcoming environment for students and staff.

Volunteer Details:

  • We’re seeking up to 20 volunteers
  • Adult volunteers will lead power washing activities
  • Youth participants will assist with hand washing and will have the fun opportunity to use the power washers under close adult supervision
  • Members of the Dole Interact Club (approx. 8 students) will participate
  • Volunteers will be organized into 3 groups, each with 2–3 adults supervising youth

Schedule:

  •  8:00 AM - 12:00PM

Check-In & Setup:

  • A sign-in desk (look for the Rotary club banner) will be set up upon arrival

Setup begins at 6:00pm.

About Keauhou Shelter

Keauhou (Keauhou means “a new beginning”) is located at 1020 Isenberg St in Honolulu (Map). We accept walk-ins and referrals based on availability. Walk-ins can come as early as 8:30 a.m. to fill out an intake pre-application. If space is available, staff will schedule a new time for applicant to return to complete the admission paperwork (no later than 4 p.m.).

Keauhou provides emergency housing using the Housing First model. This model allows us to enroll clients straight from the street and assist them once they are housed. Keauhou holds 75 clients in a dormitory-type arrangement with shared bathrooms and showers, shared kitchen, and laundry spaces.

Services include:

  • Emergency shelter for couples and individuals
  • Housing placement assistance
  • Job training
  • Obtain documents (State ID, social security card, etc.)
  • Mail services

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Homeless or at risk of being homeless.
