District Grant Applications are due to grants@rotaryd5000.org by June 15, 2023. District Grants can be used for local or international projects. For international DG projects, it is highly recommended that you have a Rotary Host Partner (Rotary Club or Rotaract Club) in the country where the project is taking place. Applications must be approved by the District Foundation Committee BEFORE the project can be implemented and you have received funds from the Foundation Committee. District Grant funds must be deposited in your Grant Account (see the MOU and Financial Management Plan details below) and all funds proposed for the Grant in your application must be disbursed from your Grants account. Failure to comply with this requirement may jeopardize the entire District Grant application for everyone.
All Projects MUST be completed by June 30 or the DDF will have to be returned to the District to return to The Rotary Foundation. Please select projects that can be completed by May of the grant year. For the Rotary Club of Hickam Pearl Harbor, please submit your proposals to Club Grants Chair, Allen Kamemoto. |

Kaka'ako Park is Makai of Ala Moana Boulevard at the end of Cooke Stree~ and makai of the John Burns School of Medicine. Opened in November of 1992 on the site of a former municipal landfill, it consists of 35 acres of grass-covered rolling hills adjacent to the ocean. The panoramic view of the ocean is spectacularl! It is also the location of the Ehime Maru Memorial which memorializes the tragic accident on 2/06/01 when the submarine USS Greeneville collided with the Japanese fishery high school training ship Ehime Maru from Ehime Prefecture in Shikoku, Japan. Nine of the thirty five people on board were killed: four high-school students, two teachers, and three crew members. We will clean the park of trash, for an hour, then clean the Memorial, located in the center of the park, at the highest point. Initial meeting point will be at the steps between the park and the parking lot to distribute supplies and instructions. Please register here if you can help out with this very worthwhile and inspiring project. We will need a headcount by June 14th so we can determine the scope of the work. |

Staying Mentally Healthy
Oct 10, 2023 6:00 PM
Register to Attend | Order Your MealBud Bowles – MSW, CPRP, HCPSExecutive Director
Mr. Bud Bowles is a distinguished advocate for mental health and an accomplished professional in both marketing and public relations. Mr. Bowles will address us on a critical topic: "The most ignored organ in the body - How to stay mentally healthy!"
A proud alumnus of the University of Hawaii, Bud boasts a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and a Master's in Social Work. Furthermore, his qualifications include certifications as a Psychosocial Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP) and as a Hawaii Certified Peer Specialist (HCPS). Since 1997, Bud has led United Self Help as its Executive Director, contributing significantly to its growth. Under his leadership, the organization offers a variety of services such as 25 support groups, educational classes, a monthly celebration, computer lessons, and even free computers for its members. Impressively, last year alone, over 1,000 individuals engaged in their diverse events. In recognition of his efforts, Bud received the "Consumer of the Year" award from Mental Health America in 2023 and has been honored with the Weinberg Foundations Achievement in Management Award on four occasions. Bud's commitment to eradicating the stigma associated with mental health has led him to deliver over 2,000 enlightening talks, reaching more than 14,000 individuals, with topics centered on stress reduction, symptom recognition, and lifestyle choices. A testament to the impact of his talks, a Rotarian once remarked, "It’s the best talk I’ve heard on mental health, and I’m a psychologist." But before delving into the realm of mental health, Bud wore many hats. He served as the Advertising and PR director for Holiday Mart, the PR director for Sheraton Hotels in Hawaii, and even spearheaded promotions for Pearlridge Shopping Center. Additionally, his entrepreneurial spirit shone as he ran his own advertising agency for two decades. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bud dedicated 23 years to the Hawaii Army National Guard, retiring as a Major in Public Affairs. He is also a seasoned speaker, being a former Toastmaster, a thrice graduate of the Dale Carnegie course, where he was twice awarded for his impromptu speeches. |

Whether your club is a subordinate under Rotary International’s 501(c)(4) group exemption or is independently tax-exempt, the IRS requires that all Rotary clubs in the U.S. and its territories file an annual information return. For clubs whose tax year follows the Rotary year, the deadline to file is 15 November. The form a club must file is dependent upon its gross receipts for the year. For more information, please see Frequently asked questions about annual reporting requirements for exempt organizations at www.irs.gov. It is important that your club comply with IRS requirements. Please note Section 6033(j) of the Internal Revenue Code automatically revokes the exemption of any organization that fails to satisfy its filing requirement for three consecutive years. Our document, US Rotary and Rotaract Clubs and the IRS: Frequently Asked Questions, provides general information about Rotary clubs and the IRS. For specific questions regarding your club’s tax-exempt status, reporting requirements, or your club’s ability to file, contact local counsel, your tax adviser, or the IRS directly at www.irs.gov or 877-829-5500. |

The line up of events that we will be assisting with is not out yet, but they will probably have about 6 stations, requiring approximately 20 volunteers. It will be in the middle of the day, so it may be challenging for some of us, but we need to have anyone who is interested in helping with this sign up right away. This is another multi-club function, spearheaded by the Ala Moana Club. The project involves chaperoning students of Lunalilo Elementary, selected by the school to go shopping for clothes and school supplies at Walmart after having a quick breakfast at McDonalds next door to Walmart on Keeaumoku St. We are to guide the kids and help them to make wise choices in spending the $100 alloted to them. The nice thing about this project is that the Ala Moana Club is providing the spending money. |
