Joint Service Project: Ehime Maru (Pearl Harbor)
Jun 17, 2023 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Kaka'ako Park is Makai of Ala Moana Boulevard at the end of Cooke Stree~ and makai of the John Burns School of Medicine. Opened in November of 1992 on the site of a former municipal landfill, it consists of 35 acres of grass-covered rolling hills adjacent to the ocean. The panoramic view of the ocean is spectacularl!

It is also the location of the Ehime Maru Memorial which memorializes the tragic accident on 2/06/01 when the submarine USS Greeneville collided with the Japanese fishery high school training ship Ehime Maru from Ehime Prefecture in Shikoku, Japan. Nine of the thirty five people on board were killed: four high-school students, two teachers, and three crew members.

We will clean the park of trash, for an hour, then clean the Memorial, located in the center of the park, at the highest point. Initial meeting point will be at the steps between the park and the parking lot to distribute supplies and instructions.

Please register here if you can help out with this very worthwhile and inspiring project. We will need a headcount by June 14th so we can determine the scope of the work.

Hawaii State Senator Brandon Elefante

Jun 20, 2023 6:00 PM

Senate District 16
‘Aiea, ‘Aiea Heights, Hālawa, Pearlridge, Newtown, Royal Summit, Waimalu, Waiau, Momilani, Pacific Palisades, and Pearl City

Born in ‘Aiea to a single mother and raised by Filipino immigrant grandparents, Brandon learned the values of commitment and responsibility at an early age. He was also taught about respect, the importance of hard work, and the value of community through his extended family.

After graduating from ‘Aiea High School, Brandon sought to explore beyond what Hawai‘i had to offer. He decided to attend Saint Mary’s College of California, where he discovered his passion for public service. He served as a resident advisor to his peers in the dormitories, and cofounded the Hawai‘i Club, where he later served as president. He received numerous awards for his dedication to student affairs and community service.

Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Business Administration, Brandon moved back home and taught social justice and world religions at Damien Memorial School. He also became active in his community once again, serving on the ‘Aiea Neighborhood Board, and eventually became a staff assistant to Hawai‘i State Senator Will Espero.

From 2011 to 2014, Brandon began working as a legislative aide to Honolulu City Councilmember Breene Harimoto. He assisted the Councilmember with tracking and following infrastructure and development projects as well as handling constituent issues in the ‘Aiea, Pearl City and Waipahū communities. This experience solidified his commitment to public service to serve the people of Hawai‘i.

Brandon is currently the Vice Chair for the Water and Land (WTL) committee and the Public Safety and Intergovernmental and Military Affairs (PSM) committee, as well as a member of the Judiciary (JDC) committee and Transportation and Culture and the Arts (TCA) committee. He is also the Co-Chair of the Joint Crime and Justice Caucus and a member of the Filipino Caucus.

IRS Annual Filing Requirement
Nov 15, 2023 12:00 PM - 12:30 PM

Whether your club is a subordinate under Rotary International’s 501(c)(4) group exemption or is independently tax-exempt, the IRS requires that all Rotary clubs in the U.S. and its territories file an annual information return. For clubs whose tax year follows the Rotary year, the deadline to file is 15 November. The form a club must file is dependent upon its gross receipts for the year. For more information, please see Frequently asked questions about annual reporting requirements for exempt organizations at www.irs.gov.

It is important that your club comply with IRS requirements. Please note Section 6033(j) of the Internal Revenue Code automatically revokes the exemption of any organization that fails to satisfy its filing requirement for three consecutive years.

Our document, US Rotary and Rotaract Clubs and the IRS: Frequently Asked Questions, provides general information about Rotary clubs and the IRS. For specific questions regarding your club’s tax-exempt status, reporting requirements, or your club’s ability to file, contact local counsel, your tax adviser, or the IRS directly at www.irs.gov or 877-829-5500.
